About DNEP

Founded in 2016, The Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project was established to support neighborhood-based small businesses in Detroit while providing students with an interdisciplinary learning experience, rooted in mutual respect, cultural humility, and reciprocity.

The Detroit Neighborhood Entrepreneurs Project was first launched by University of Michigan faculty, Michael Barr (Law/Public Policy), Hannah Smotrich (Design) and Michael Gordon (Business), in concert with the University of Michigan Center on Finance, Law & Policy (CFLP), an economic policy research center based out of U-M's School of Public Policy. Since 2016, DNEP has grown from this initial collaboration into a slate of classes, internships, and one-on-one clinics providing free services and resources to Detroit small business owners throughout the academic year.
